The notary Ser Matteo di Biliotto, originally from Fiesole, was one of the most important notaries in Florence in the age of Dante Alighieri. Only two registers of him survive in the State Archive of Florence: Notarile antecosimiano, 13363 and 13364. The A. edited in 2002 the first register, which includes 930 notarial acts from 1 April 1294 to 26 May 1296 (Ser Matteo di Biliotto notaio, Imbreviature, in collaboration with F. Sznura, Florence, Sismel - Edizioni del Galluzzo, 2002). The edition of the second one – which contains 569 imbreviature dated from 17 October 1300 to 13 June 1314 – is in press. In this study the A. focuses on the main questions of the biography of ser Matteo, who played an important role in the political life of the Florentine Comune and in the activity of the powerful art of Calimala.
